On a visit to Finland several years ago, I came upon the Moomin Museum in Tampere. This chance visit led to a fascinating and ongoing study of the life and works of author, artist and cartoonist Tove Jansson. Since then, I have acquired a large collection of rare material relating not only to the Moomins, but to Jansson’s extensive other work.
This includes her early childhood comics and her cartoon work for Finnish satire magazine, Garm, many of which I have translated into English for the first time. I have also translated Villain in the Moominhouse (Skurken i Muminhuset), the final Moomin book written in 1980. Unpublished in English, this story will be getting its debut reading at the Archway With Words literary festival in North London in September this year.
I have also translated Treasure of Tortuga (Skatten på Tortuga), an almost-forgotten novel written by brother and Moomin cartoonist Lars Jansson. Fewer than ten copies exist of this 1941 book, and it is expected to make its English print debut in 2018.
The work is ongoing, so please head over to Moomin History for the latest updates.
